RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — North Carolina Democratic Party delegates have joined Governor Roy Cooper in unanimously endorsing Kamala Harris for president.
Anderson Clayton, chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party, broke the news on social media Sunday night.
This comes just a month before the Democratic National Convention, where 168 delegates were supposed to vote for Joe Biden.
In a letter circulated to delegates across the country, Harris was described as the most experienced and capable candidate to unite the party against Donald Trump.
“We strongly and enthusiastically endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the candidate with the best experience and ability to unite the Democratic Party and America, for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. We ask that you join us in our support,” the letter said. “We fully recognize the historic significance of this moment. We respectfully urge delegates to the 2024 Democratic National Convention and all voters in November to endorse Kamala Harris for President of the United States.”
Joe Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race has sparked confusion across the country about how delegates appointed to the party's conventions will and should vote.
It's unclear what will ultimately happen at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“Our mission here in Chicago remains the same: during our convention, we have the opportunity to show the nation and the world who the Democratic Party is and what we stand for. Over the past year, we have literally and figuratively set the stage for President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the Democratic Party to tell the American people our story. The historic progress the Democratic Party has made under a Biden-Harris Administration will be central to that story, as well as the story of what is at stake in this election,” Mignon Moore, convention chair of the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement. “We look forward to welcoming delegates and guests to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago from August 19-22, and rallying support for our candidates for president and vice president of the United States, and defeating Donald Trump once again.”
