Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd has responded to a spate of break-ins at the homes of professional athletes in recent months after 25-year-old star player Luka Doncic's home was burglarized on Friday. In the latest incident, Luka Doncic said he is in “good condition.”
“I reached out to him and texted him,” Kidd said Saturday. “He's doing well after going through that incident. I'm glad no one was hurt. I spoke to him today.”
Lara Beth Seeger, Doncic's business manager, told multiple media outlets that no one was home at the time of the break-in and that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Approximately $30,000 worth of jewelry was taken from the home, according to the Dallas Morning News, which obtained an internal police report.
It is unclear who robbed Doncic's home.
At least six professional athletes' homes have been burglarized since September, including Doncic's. Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley's home was broken into on September 15th, and Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis' home was broken into on November 2nd.
On October 6, there was a break-in at Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' residence in Missouri. Mahomes called the incident “frustrating” and “unfortunate.” Mahomes' teammate Travis Kelce also had his home broken into in October. On December 9th, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow's home in Ohio was broken into.
In November, the NFL and NBA released a memo about the threat posed by groups of burglars targeting the homes of professional athletes.
The NBA memo indicates that the FBI has identified a “South American transnational theft group,” which “reportedly incorporates advanced methods and technology, including proactive surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices.” It is said to be a well-organized and sophisticated organization.
Doncic suffered a strained left calf muscle during the Mavericks' game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on December 25th. He is expected to be sidelined for at least a month.
The Mavericks began a four-game road trip Friday with a win over the Phoenix Suns.
