Sunday in Wilkesboro, people spent the day cleaning up their yards on the streets and in their neighborhoods. Days after a tornado ripped through parts of Wilkes County, Wilkesboro United Methodist Pastor Karen Roberts said it was the neighbors' fault. Even after the incredible devastation, they were able to hold regular Sunday services. These two huge trees fell down and blocked this side of the building, but volunteers came in one day and cleaned everything up, so we were able to worship this morning. Sometimes God's miracles happen on the hands and feet of people you don't even know. Just up the road, Vietnam veteran Frank Wilson was picking up a stick that had fallen on his property. He said his home was largely unaffected so he was keeping an eye on his neighbors. Yesterday I woke up and was talking to my neighbor and we were discussing how we would split the costs of things like cutting down a tree. And, um, I think it was a real community effort in terms of making sure that everyone was looked after. And in large organizations like Samaritan's Purse, there is an outpouring of generosity as neighbors look out for each other. Especially today, there are people here who said, “You helped me yesterday.'' Now that my property is cleared out, I'd like to help out some of my neighbors, but I'll probably be done by the end of this week. Probably this Thursday or Friday.
