Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police to release update on April shooting that left four officers dead

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officials are expected to provide an update Friday evening on the shooting that left eight officers shot in April. Three U.S. Marshals Service officers — Alden Elliott, Samuel Poroche and Thomas Weeks Jr. — all died from their injuries. CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer also died during the shootout. The April 30 shooting occurred as a U.S. Marshals Task Force was responding to a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in the 5000 block of Galway Drive. ►What we know about the four officers shot and killed in the line of duty. The officers were hit by gunfire and then returned fire. The shooter, Terry Clark Hughes Jr., 39, was shot and killed in the front yard of a home. CMPD officials confirmed that Hughes, who fired the first shot, was the person for whom an arrest warrant was issued. The officer said the suspect was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of fleeing from Lincoln County, North Carolina. CMPD officers also interviewed two women who were in the home at the time of the shooting, but have not said whether they will be charged. ►How law enforcement agencies around the state are responding to this deadly shooting: After the shooting, law enforcement said they found an AR-15 rifle and a handgun at the scene. They also found additional magazines for both weapons. Officers said there was a heavy gunfight and that 100 rounds of bullets were exchanged during the shooting. The injured CMPD officers were not part of the task force but had been called to the scene. CMPD said 12 officers fired their duty weapons and were placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure.

CMPD officials confirmed that the initial shooter, Hughes, had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Lincoln County, North Carolina, for possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of fleeing, deputies said.
CMPD officers also questioned two women who were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but have not said whether they will face charges.
