The British Governance Labour Party on Saturday said it had stopped one of the parliamentary MPs, Dan Norris, after being arrested by police.
Morris was “quickly stopped by the Labour Party when he was informed of his arrest,” the party said in a statement, adding that he “cannot comment any more while the police investigation is underway.”
The party did not specify why Norris, 65, was arrested and did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.
In the UK, police usually do not disclose the suspect's name unless accused. The BBC said Norris was arrested on suspicion of rape, child sex offences, child accusations and misconduct in public office.
In a statement that was not named, Avon and Somerset police said a man in the 60s was arrested on Friday on suspicion of sexual offences involving fraud against a girl, rape, child accuse and civil servants. Police said he was released on conditional bail.
“In December 2024, we were referred by another police regarding alleged indiscriminate child sex crimes committed against a girl,” the police statement said.
“It is said that most crimes occurred in the 2000s, but we are also investigating alleged rape crimes since the 2020s,” he added. Police said the investigation was “continuous and early stages.”
The Labour Party's move is expected to mean Norris is waiting for an investigation. Efficiently halt from representing the party in the House of Representatives.
Last year, Norris won a seat in the council representing Northeast Somerset and Hanham, near Bristol, defeating former conservative minister Jacob Reese Mogg.
Norris is also the mayor of the West of England, a position he has served since 2021, but has not run for reelection when the post is contested on May 1st.
His political career dates back more than 20 years. Norris was a lawmaker from 1997 to 2010, representing the seat of Wandike in western England. He was a supporting whip for the government of Tony Blair from 2001 to 2003, and from 2009 to 2010, he was Deputy Minister of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs under Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
