ASHEVILLE — If you wake up in the morning with a taco craving, you no longer have to wait until lunch or dinner to satisfy that craving.
Breakfast tacos are the answer, and you'll find the best ones at Taco Billy, an Asheville-founded restaurant.
In June, Yelp released its list of the best breakfast tacos of all time in each state, naming Taco Billy's as North Carolina's signature spot.
As of July 3, Taco Billy has a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 453 reviews.
“We feel very honored, lucky and excited,” owner Hunter Berry said. “It's nice that someone is recognizing what we're doing.”
Berry thanked customers for their support and praised Taco Billy's staff for their hard work.
Berry said the highlight of the breakfast tacos are the fresh eggs, sourced from Pharside Farm in Buncombe County.
“We get about 5,000 eggs delivered a week,” Berry said.
Berry said Taco Billy's breakfast taco portions and its homemade, gluten-free plantain tortillas are also factors in its success.
“Breakfast tacos are typically made with eggs,” Berry said. “We sell them in the morning and in the evening. They're eggs, a protein, veggies, cheese, and we've got salsa on the side. It's the best breakfast I can think of.”
Taco Billy's most popular breakfast taco is “Mama's Favorite,” which is sausage, egg, spinach, sweet potato and goat cheese wrapped in a plantain tortilla and costs $5.95.
Another hit is the migas taco, made with egg, onion, jalapeƱo, tomato, crispy fried tortilla strips and cheddar jack cheese, priced at $5.25.
There are other specialty tacos on the menu, but guests can also build their own tacos. There is also a lunch/dinner taco menu.
Berry said the restaurant is still serving the same menu and sourcing from most of the same suppliers as when it opened in 2015 because “it seems to work.”
Taco Billy's original location is at 201 Haywood Road. In December 2022, Taco Billy's expanded to 117 Cherry Street in Black Mountain.
The West Asheville restaurant recently launched its Live Music Fridays series on its back patio, which is set to run through October.
