A Greensboro man faces multiple sexual offense charges from 2020, according to court documents.
Plan your summer road trip. Good morning. Thanks for joining us. I'm Star Connor with Dylan Butler and Dylan. It's sunny behind me, but I don't think it's the look for today. No, this isn't a live image, so it's not the look for the rest of this. I wish it was. It's beautiful behind me. I mean, it's still a good way to start the day. Blue skies, but some clouds rolling overhead. This is Graham in Alamance County. How's that going? I liked the camera shot of the downtown courthouse area. Temperatures are in the mid 70s. Temperatures are rising right now, especially in the south and east. It's only just after 8 o'clock. Troy in Montgomery County is already approaching 80 degrees. Other areas are approaching 70 degrees. Mountain and foothill areas are also approaching 70 degrees by this time. It's going to be hot again this afternoon. Sunny at least through the morning, but storms will develop later. Areas most at risk for heat are Burlington, Asheboro, Troy, and other areas. Today, south and east of the Piedmont Triad. This heat advisory is in effect until 8:00. Heat indexes could reach 110 degrees by late afternoon. It will be muggy and scorching hot outside today by late afternoon. This heat and humidity will also allow for some scattered showers and storms to develop. This afternoon, east of the Triad and Piedmont is a high impact day as it has the highest chance of storms developing today. Reports of scattered storms are quite high, about 50% later in the day. Highs in the low 90s F. Scattered storms are possible tomorrow as well. Sunday is also an impact day. There is a good chance of some much needed rain Monday and Tuesday. Speaking of rain and the tropics, I have to talk about Tropical Storm Beryl. I will give you an update soon. Okay. Thank you. Dylan, it is 8:02 now. A Burlington woman accused of killing a man in Carrboro five weeks ago, Carla Machuca, is awaiting extradition to North Carolina. Machuca was arrested in Los Angeles on June 12 after Juan Maldonado-Espinoza's body was discovered on May 29. Burlington Times-News reporting partners report the two were dating. Machuca was charged with first-degree murder and two felonies, while a Kernersville woman accused of killing her mother was denied bail. Officers who responded to a home on Book View Court on Thursday found 74-year-old Linda Turner, Tyrrell, dead from head trauma. Michelle De Guzman is now charged with first-degree murder, and the Surry County Sheriff's Office is asking Mount Airy residents for security video to help with the murder investigation. A man was found dead on the side of Mount Hermon Church Road on Thursday. Investigators say someone shot him. In High Point, police are searching for the person responsible for Thursday night's deadly shooting. Police say two people were shot when a large group of people were setting off fireworks in a parking lot on East Lexington Street. Authorities say Keith Lynch died at the hospital. The second victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering. Investigators say they are examining shell casings found at the scene to try to determine what led up to the shooting. As many of you are enjoying the long holiday weekend, we are continuing our coverage of boater safety. Right now, the waterways are busier than ever, and earlier this week we spoke with experienced boaters and officials to gather safety tips for you and your loved ones. Honestly, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and everyone around you. Aaron Turner has been boating for years. This year, he's taking his two sons out on the water, and safety is a top priority. Have a first aid kit and other things ready. As soon as you get out on the water, make sure you're not overfilled. The bilge pumps are on for the first half mile. Check every nook and cranny. Matthew Proctor is an enforcement officer with the North Carolina Department of Wildlife Conservation. He monitors Lake Bellows and says boater education is important and necessary to operate a boat. The most recent statistics from the Coast Guard show that 74% of recorded boating accidents are without boater education. He wants boaters to be mindful of speed and the safety of all aboard. You see a lot of kids here wearing adult life jackets. It doesn't count. Many wakeboarders wear shock-absorbing vests to reduce the impact when they fall into the water, but the vests actually say on the inside that they don't count as a life jacket. That's why he says emergency services often get more calls this time of year. There are roughly 350,000 boats registered in North Carolina. More boaters means more accidents. Proctor said boaters should always carry a whistle or bell on board, adding that lights should always be on at night, and he encourages people with pets to make sure their four-legged friends wear life jackets while on the water. You may also notice more officers patrolling the water. This weekend, the state Wildlife Resources Commission is conducting “Operation Dry Water” through Saturday. Officials say they will have as many enforcement boats on the waterways as possible to keep people safe. They also plan to hire boat captains who don't drink and drive.
