A 42-year-old man was killed in a fatal crash in Burke County, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
I'm going to share with you some of the student responses. Good morning. Thanks for joining us. I'm Star Connor. This morning I'm joined by Dylan Hatler. Dylan, it looks like you're going to have a nice day at the beach. Nice day. This is a Bill Withers song, right? Yeah, it's a nice song. One of my favorite songs. I just remembered it. Okay, so that's the mood for Memorial Day Weekend. Nice day, right. Off to the beach. Myrtle Beach is looking good here too. We just had a beautiful sunrise. The beach doesn't seem to be too busy right now, but I'm sure there will be people on the shore this afternoon. Yesterday on my way home from work, I was driving down the highway and playing a game of license plates. Because there were a lot of people there who weren't from North Carolina and were traveling through our state for a nice vacation over Memorial Day weekend. And they're going to have to deal with the heat and humidity. But there's also a chance of rain and storms here and there. It's not a downpour, so don't worry. This is just summer weather. There will be a little bit of downpours and storms later in the afternoon. Sunday will probably be the driest day of the holiday. Monday will probably be the rainiest day of the holiday. So we'll talk about that in the future. But we've got some sunshine coming through the clouds, so it's already starting to get warmer. It's just after 8 o'clock here, and it's only just turned 8, but it's 72 degrees in Winston-Salem. We're starting off today with a mild, muggy day. There was also a storm that tried to go over the mountains last night, but it started to weaken. And now we have a few light rains remaining in the Southern Piedmont. This rain is now moving out of our area towards the Sandhills, but we may get a shower or two this morning. Most areas will not get any rain until mid-afternoon, and then the storms will start around that time. In the future forecast, you saw some of the storms that will pass by. We're not going to get storms everywhere today, but we may get a shower or two of heavy rain. If you're outdoors, by the pool or the lake, and you hear thunder, be prepared to take shelter indoors. You need to wait until the storm has passed. It will be hot and humid this afternoon with highs in the mid-80s. A few storms are possible and similar conditions are expected for the rest of the weekend. We'll also talk about tomorrow's expected heat index and the risk of even stronger storms on Monday. We'll get to you on all of that soon. Well then. It's 8:03 AM. Three people are dead this morning in Statesville after a suspected murder-suicide. Police responded to a call of shots fired around 7:00 AM on Friday morning. When officers arrived on scene, three people were found dead inside the home. They have not been identified, and police say a young child was also in the home but was not injured. We are also following new developments in the death of an Asheboro teen. The parents of the 16-year-old boy who allegedly shot and killed Pedro Ortiz-Perez have been charged. Asheboro police detained the parents of a suspect Thursday for helping a 16-year-old boy avoid arrest. Dennis Vera and Alfredo Ramirez are the parents of a 16-year-old boy accused of shooting and killing Pedro on May 3. Both were charged with accessory after the fact to a felony, police arrested Vera at his home, and Ramirez turned himself in to the county jail. Ellen University legal experts say helping someone avoid arrest can mean a variety of things. What does it mean? Taking someone somewhere, hiding them, giving them something to hide from police, giving them a map, giving them a safe haven. The parents are due back in court on July 30. A GO FUND ME page has been set up for Pedro's family. Details are on the website, and police say he was not Greensboro's target. Police are investigating near Denny Road and Darby Place. Officers were called out Friday afternoon after receiving information about an assault, police said. There was a shooting and a woman was injured, but they did not say who fired the shots. After an investigation, it was found that no one was in the house, and two of the suspects arrested in the death of Greensboro Police Sergeant Philip Del Nix returned to court this week. Judge Brian Tomlin refused to change bail for Jamir Foster and Zachariah Blackwell. Foster, who appeared in court Thursday afternoon, is charged with first-degree murder. His lawyer was hoping the judge would change his bail from surety to no surety. Blackwell, who is accused of being an accomplice, appeared in court online. Her lawyer is asking for bail to be reduced to $200,000, half of the $1 million, and Ellen University Law Professor Steven Freeland said it is typical for judges to reject these types of motions. He said their argument is not necessarily helped by the crimes they allegedly committed. Foster's lawyer said that before the shooting, she did not know Nix was a police officer because he was wearing plain clothes. Blackwell's lawyer said she was asleep in her car when the shooting happened. These “I didn't know” type defenses generally wouldn't work if these individuals were on their way to commit a felony, i.e., a convenience store robbery. Freeland said the process could take a year or more, and Foster and Blackwell are scheduled to appear in court on July 23. And there has been an outpouring of support for Sergeant Nix's family.
