A day after San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot during an attempted robbery in San Francisco, he was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon, the team announced.
Pearsall did not require surgery and was alert at the time of his hospital stay, league officials said. Pearsall's family was in his hospital room Saturday night.
“He, his family and the entire San Francisco 49ers organization would like to express their gratitude to the San Francisco Police Department, Emergency Medical Services and the doctors and staff at San Francisco General Hospital,” the 49ers said in a statement Sunday.
The hospital announced early Sunday that Pearsall, 23, was in “good” condition.
Police said Pearsall was shot in the Union Square area of San Francisco after a confrontation ensued when he was approached by a suspect. Both Pearsall and the suspect were shot during the attempted robbery, police said.
Police said Saturday they had taken into custody a 17-year-old suspect from Tracy, California, about 60 miles east of San Francisco. San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said the suspect's gun was recovered at the scene.
Scott added that it does not appear that Pearsall was targeted because he is an NFL player, and that police believe the suspect was acting alone. Scott, who has spoken with Pearsall about the incident, said:
Pearsall was the 31st pick by the 49ers in this year's draft and played three seasons at Arizona State and two years at the University of Florida.
