Three people were killed and 10 others injured in a shooting at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas, on Friday morning, police said.
Arkansas State Police said in a statement that a gunman opened fire at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, central Arkansas, around 11:30 a.m.
Police said the shooter, whose name has not been released, was shot and wounded by police and then taken into custody.
Ten people were injured in the shooting, including two police officers. The officers' injuries were not life-threatening, and the shooter's injuries were not life-threatening, Arkansas State Police Chief Mike Hager said at a news conference.
The conditions of the others who were injured ranged from non-life-threatening to “extremely critical,” Haggar said.
The motive for the shooting is unclear.
Videos and images posted on social media showed bullet holes in store windows and a person wielding what appeared to be a rifle firing shots from the parking lot.
David Rodriguez was filling up his car at a nearby gas station when he heard several explosions he thought were fireworks.
“Then all of a sudden, a shootout started between police and somebody in the parking lot,” Rodriguez, 58, of Kingsland, Arkansas, said in an interview. He pulled out his cellphone and began filming the shooting, then realized he had to run.
Matt Gill was working as a butcher at the Mad Butcher when he heard a popping noise.
“Everybody was like, 'What's that noise?'” Gill, 38, said in an interview. “I said, 'It's a shotgun. We have to hurry.'”
Gill said he led his co-workers out the back of the store, but several employees were torn apart as they fled.
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on social media that she had received an update on the shooting in Fordyce, a city of about 3,300 people about 70 miles south of Little Rock, Arkansas.
“Thank you to the police and emergency responders who acted quickly and heroically to save a life,” she wrote.
